Choosing Poles for ski touring / ski mountaineering
Article index
One piece poles are great for this they are cheap, light and reliable, the only thing you may want to do to them is put on a larger basket than the standard shop one for use in soft snow and wind some tape round the shaft so they are easier to grip when traversing. Carbon poles feel great to ski with but are expensive and break easily.
Trab make a really nice one piece pole called the Rally SG which has a rubbery foam grip down the top of the shaft. If you are tempted by an adjustable length pole then the ones utilising a flick lock system are the strongest and less of a tendency to collapse, these are sold by Black Diamond and Gipron. Life Link and Leki both produce models that screw tight to adjust the length, the Life Link model has an oval shaped expander which is more reliable. The Black Diamond, Life Link and Leki models all convert to an avalanche probe which at 2m is useful but a bit short for serious probing.
