They fit to the ski binding and allow you to keep moving avoiding the need to put crampons on your boots and carrying your skis. The trick with ski crampons is putting them on early enough before the tricky terrain. People often find themselves putting them on in an awkward place when they could have done it on easier terrain. The crampons for Dynafit bindings are brilliant, the slide horizontally onto the base plate of the binding and flop along as you glide the foot forward then biting when you put your foot down. Their lightweight design with a hole allows them to be clipped to the harness or your rucksack when not in use.
Fritschi have developed the Axion which can be fitted to any of their binding models produced after 2004. The Axion can be left permanently on the binding and can be deployed using a ski stick. This avoids the epic of taking your skis off on an icy slope. On models made before 2004 the crampon clips onto the central bar. They all come in a variety of widths to fit larger skis.
