Fitting and using Ski Crampons also known as Couteau or Harscheisen

Make sure you stop in plenty of time if you think you are going to have to use Couteau or Harscheisen it is very difficult to fit them once on an icy slope without first chopping a platform with your ice axe.

The only exception to this is with the new Axiom from Fritschi which can be deployed using a ski pole. With a standard Fritschi unit locate the two prongs on the front of the binding then push the unit down hard onto the main bar of the binding. With a Dynafit binding slide the crampon horizontally into place on the base plate of the crampon. When moving up hill you will almost certainly have to lift the ski much more than you would when skinning, if the ice is hard under foot you may have to stamp quite hard to get the crampon to bite.
