Putting on skins

Skins stick best to the base of the ski when the ski base is dry and if possible warm; as soon as you stop rub the moisture from the base of your ski using a glove.

If you are doing this on a glacier do one ski at a time keep the other ski on to spread your weight in case of crevasses. Position the ski so the base is towards the sun, remove one skin from your sac at a time, hook the tip of the skin over the tip of the ski then smooth the skin down the length of the ski unpeeling it as you go. If you use a backing sheet or mesh it is worth cutting the original length in half, fold the skin in half with the sheet in the middle. The ski should be positioned on the ski with the metal edges showing. Once the skin is stuck to the ski run your hand repeatedly along the skin from tip to tail to make sure it is completely stuck down, pay particular attention to the tail. The friction generated warms the skin helping the glue to stick. Repeat for the other ski. To get the most from your skins have a look at our advice on caring for skins.
